A manufacturer of materials used in lithium-ion batteries is reportedly planning an Ohio plant that would be the largest project of its kind in the area’s history.

Semcorp Manufacturing USA proposed a nearly $1 billion factory in western Ohio that would produce separator film for electric-vehicle batteries, the Dayton Business Journal reports.

The factory in Sidney, Ohio, would be the largest project to date in the Dayton metro area, as well as the largest initial foreign investment in state history. It would create nearly 1,200 new jobs and have an annual payroll of more than $73 million.

Economic development officials detailed the project after state officials approved a 15-year, 2.1% tax credit to support the effort. The Business Journal reports that the deal could be worth $22.7 million and would require Semcorp to operate in Sidney for at least 18 years. The project is dependent on the approval of additional local economic incentives.

Semcorp, the largest lithium-ion battery separator maker in the world, indicated the proposed plant would be its first in North America. The Dayton area is reportedly competing with Texas to host the factory.

“Semcorp looks forward to being a part of the strong electric vehicle supply chain in Ohio and the U.S. and the opportunity to invest in the hard-working people of the Dayton region and Sidney,” Jeff Hoagland, president and CEO of the Dayton Development Coalition, told the publication.
